What Christ follower doesn't want a closer, more intimate relationship with God? That is the topic of this book, The Pleasure of His Company: a Journey to Intimate Friendship With God by Dutch Sheets.
When I first got this book, my assumption was I was going to read it just like every other book I receive...straight through. On the back, though, it says the book can be used as a devotional. Based on the fact there are 30 short chapters and that each chapter is it's own small vignette, I suggest using this book as a devotional instead of simply reading it through. Each chapter is like a short sermon on some aspect of developing intimacy with God and I feel like this book would be best read slowly, one chapter a day.
What I find remarkable about this book is the writing style. Sheets' writing style is so clear and inviting, I had a hard time putting it down. He also does an excellent job of balancing scripture with personal stories. The stories do a great job illustrating and adding color to the concepts he is trying to convey. This would be a great book to wake up to in the morning or to read shortly before bedtime each night.
Overall, I recommend this book as a devotional. If I were to read it as a whole book, it would feel too choppy.
I received this book free of charge from Bethany House in return for my honest review.
