When I first started reading What Matters Most: How We Got the Point but Missed the Person, by Leonard Sweet, I didn't like it. I've read other books by Sweet and loved his unique point of view and beautiful prose, but this one seemed all over the place and basic. Then I realized what it was that wasn't jiving with me...this book was about something totally different than what I had assumed it would be based on the title.
From that point on, the only thing I didn't like about the book was the title. I was expecting this book to be about Jesus based on the subtitle. And all good Christian books are on some level. But instead of being directly about who Jesus was, this book is instead about relationships, such as our relationship to God, our relationship to God's story, our relationship to other Christians, etc. Once this clicked, I tore through this book like I have with others of Sweet's book. It is another well written, well thought out book by an author that has a unique voice among many of the popular Christian authors today. Everyone is interested in relationships of some sort and as a Christian, this was an extremely helpful guide on the most important relationships we have and how to manage them.
This book could even be used in a small group format easily. In the back, there is a section of contemplation/discussion questions that are, again, well thought out and well written. In fact, reading the questions got me excited about the prospect of leading a small group through this book.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for a unique, Christ-centered guide for relating to the important things in a Christian's life.
