Book Reviews: In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day by Mark Batterson

In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day: How to Survive and Thrive When Opportunity Roars by Mark Batterson is one of those books that you can't read without being challenged on some level. Based on an obscure two verse account from 2 Samuel 23:20-21, Batterson takes this account of a lion chaser and fleshes out how we as Christians can be lion chasers as well. This book shakes you out of your comfort zone and challenges you into the fearless lion chasing life God created you to have.

While the writing is very accessible and engaging, my favorite thing about the book are the chapter summaries at the end of each chapter. The vast majority of these are well-crafted one-liners that can serve as affirmations, reminders or motivational quotes which can be used to drive home the points of each chapter. One of my favorites was from Chapter 4, "Worship is forgetting what's wrong with you and remembering what's right with God."

The other thing I really enjoyed about the book was that Batterson's reasoning for why we should each chase a lion is air tight. I can't imagine anyone walking away from this book with some reason why they themselves can't pursue their challenges. The topics he addresses are relevant and thorough. It leaves you with a life affirming trust in what God is capable of doing in your life and gives you the thrust to pursue those things.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. I can't imagine a better book written on this topic. This is a book that I will recommend over and over again to people who have a lion they need to chase.

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for my honest review.
